Organic baby formula is what it sounds like: a pure, all-natural formula made entirely with natural ingredients. That means: No preservatives or synthetic chemicals. No unnecessary coloring or pesticides. No unnecessary vitamins or minerals.
The best thing about organic baby formula is that it’s safer for your babies. There’s no need to worry about chemical residues because organic formulas are generally free of them. You can’t say the same about conventional breast milk. (There are traces of pesticides and other synthetic chemicals in it, too, and some moms have developed illnesses from the chemicals.) The absence of these artificial components means a more natural product for your babies.
Another advantage of organic formulas is that they’re just as good for you as they are for your babies. The vitamins and minerals are available naturally and without cause digestive upsets or other negative reactions. (You’ll need to do a little research on any supplement, you might be considering using for your baby.) Since organic ingredients pass through the digestive system without problems, you get the same vitamins and minerals as you would get from natural breast milk or other organic sources.
Organic formulas can also be more affordable than other types of formula. Most organic formulas use organic goat milk or cow milk, which is much cheaper than cow’s milk from another species. Goat milk is more cost-effective because it’s more difficult to find. (This also applies to organic formulas based on organic ingredients.)
One disadvantage of organic formulas is that sometimes the solids can get stuck in the feeding tube and prevent the infant from swallowing. This is less likely if the baby is on a breast-feeding bottle, but even if the infant is bottle-fed, some solids can become lodged between the teeth of the infant. To prevent this problem, many baby formula manufacturers have started including small balls, tiny seeds or other material that can be flushed out of the feeder. (The balls don’t taste like anything – they’re designed to be tiny – but they can get stuck.)
Organic formulas may not have the flavor of their regular counterparts, but at least they contain no artificial flavorings or colors. In addition, organic formulas usually contain fewer artificial preservatives, colors or flavourings than those made with corn syrup or other artificial ingredients. Organic baby formula has certainly come a long way from the “junk foods” label.
